Frantic 2
Based on feedback Ive recieved so far Ive started making a few changes to the game. The main one is obviously difficulty, I like that the game has high difficulty as Ive played it ALOT, and its alot more fun to test things when I find them challenging. But obviously its not ideal, so Ive decided to seperate the game into 5 diffuculties. This is a bit extreme but I want to make sure theres always a challenging mode for people who wanna replay the game many times, but I also want to make sure the game is alot easier in the easier modes, as it is I think its too hard, especially in comparison to Frantic 1.
Ok, theres many other smaller changes, Ive changed how fast the coins move, there is now an option for a black background ( I gave in ). The levels will be altered to give a slower start. All levels will be polished up so that killing every enemy is actually possible, and things are a little less ‘jerky’. Some of the in level bullet patterns will probably be toned down and tweaked a little.
All the bosses released in the Beta version will be either replaced for fixed up so they arnt as cheap, and the balance will be sorted out ( boss 3 wont be impossible lol). Also the minibosses will be given less health. The bosses will actually convert bullets in to coins as in Frantic 1. Ill also be balancing the weapons up a bit. Not to mention a ton of other polish related things.
Finished 9 new bosses today, just in the process of making sure they are balanced and fun in each difficulty.
Prolly upload a gameplay video later if I find the time, and energy lol.

found a bug (maybe not one?)
when buying cards, i was able to buy multiple cards from the same categories (bottom 3 categories).
for example, i could buy 3 green cards or 3 white cards.
this might be intentional but i thought you should know

btw i think though the hard mode is extremely difficult, it feels good for people who want a challenge. maybe make that the 4th or 5th difficulty

first of all: sry for the triple post, i just keep getting new questions
will there be a saving feature in the final release? If there isn’t I would suggest implementing it because with all the unlockables, a lot of people wouldn’t be able to experience the whole game in one sitting.

Haha no worries, thanks for the feedback.
The general cards fit in any general slot, Ill have to remember to comunicate it a little better.
Hard mode is the 4th difficulty, the higher difficulty is only barley higher, as at that point it becomes hard to control lol, but Ive played it for a while a hard feels ‘ok’, so somthing a tiny bit harder would probably be good.
Yeah, all the unlockables will be saved, between level saving cant happen because it makes highscore hacking easy. But all your stats and preferences will be saved so you dont have to bother keep altering the options or re-entering your name. Also you can keep track of everything - Ide love to see my stats from all my testing lol. Probably have 10 hours of bullet scraping!

I love Frantic. It remind me a lot of the Raiden series, which I’ve always loved. I can’t wait to see Frantic II.

Spring Break is up, and school is out! I don’t drink or party anymore cuz it’s bad for the body, so I guess ill play a little frantic. (Good for eye-hand coordination). lol Hopefully you don’t mind being called pollyrabut.

Try changing the 5th difficulty by inserting a different final boss that comes right after the original one, being more powerful than him.

I’d be interested in testing out the new beta when you release it.

Hey man. I’d be honored if you let me test out the new game. I loved the
first one so much because unlike other incredably diffacult Shumps you
get a health bar. In case you don’t know what I mean here is me playing
one.
Me: Okay! I’m gonna beat this game! Okay here we go, level 1.
(5 seconds later) WHAT THE ****INK H**L! THAT DIDN”T HIT ME!
Sorry bout the long post, sorry
Hope you’ll let me test.

The first one was a really awesome game, lots of fun, though I’m used to bullet hell shmups so it was rather easy. I beat it without dying my first try (although I used the heavily shielded one for safety) The only attack pattern that managed to actually get me anywhere close to death was the one on level 7? 8?, that fires a wall of bullets that you have little space to navigate in left and right. After that I upgraded shields.
The boss immediately after was a joke though, an obvious safespot at the bottom of the screen meant I didn’t even move the whole time.
My only suggestion is to add a few targeted shots to some boss patterns, forcing you to move, nothing in the game seems to fire in reference to the player directly. This can lead to safespots, which is fine for earlier, easier bosses, but if a safespot shows up at a later boss it can make it sort of anticlimactic.
Don’t mind the nitpicks though, it’s easily one of my favourite flash shmups, up there with Danmaku Legend and Raiden X. Few flash shmups come close to being as good as yours.

Actually, I did notice one stranger bug in the first game, if you’re shooting at enemies at close range, they don’t seem to be hit (not flashing, shots passing through their sprite). This only happened on later levels with maxed out fire rate and like +40 damage, although it may happen earlier and I didn’t notice. Anyone else have that happen to them? Only my laser sidearms seemed to be killing them at close range, the shots themselves only worked if the small enemies were far enough away.
May 6th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
That was a bug in the collision detection code, it was supposed to be an optimization but didnt work properly, doesnt happen in the sequel :P.
Be posting an update as soon as I have one.
May 15th, 2009 at 5:15 am

Heylo? Polymerrr!? Its been awhile since you’ve posted an update! You still working on this game?
June 10th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Ive been .. ‘inactive’ for a while, Im back now. Ill post an update soon just to show Im alive. I cant see it being to long before release now.
I wont bother with a second beta, I think a release is a better way to get those little evil bugs out.
June 11th, 2009 at 6:23 am
